Our content team will enable our instructor team in delivering a curriculum to our students in a variety of formats.

What the role and responsibilities look like:

Content Authors are principally responsible for authoring instructional resources for all TIY in-person and online courses. The resources that you author will include, but aren't limited to: lesson plans, lecture notes, quizzes, exercises, capstone projects, and more. You will work with a distributed but tight knit group of Authors and Directors to produce high quality educational experience for all of our students.

The Iron Yard intentionally hires the best programmers because the insight and practical experience that seasoned professionals bring is invaluable to our students. To augment the experience you bring to the authoring process, you will be expected to learn about pedagogy, educational theory, and the The Iron Yard Way of delivering instruction.

Other responsibilities could include, but aren't limited to: Researching new and emerging technologies, coordinating existing material with Immersive Instructors, collaborating with Directors on special projects, editorial review and peer review of written materials, and more.


  • Production experience delivering code using Ruby, including each of the following technologies:
    • Rails 5.0
    • MiniTest
    • PostgreSQL
    • Sinatra (or other micro-framework)
  • Mastery of standard coding practices in your principal language, such as naming standards, indentation, and unit testing
  • Experience using GitHub for collaboration with branching, pull-requests, and reviewing changes
  • Comfort with the Unix shell, command line tools, and text editors
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent research skills
  • Writing samples, including but not limited to: blog posts, tutorials, articles, books, etc.
  • Experience with distributed teams
  • Excitement about joining the movement to increase diversity in tech
  • Active participation in the developer community with a portfolio of recent work
  • You really care about making a difference in education


  • Production experience with one of the following environments:
    • JavaScript (modern front-end or Node)
    • Java (Spring)
    • C# (ASP.NET MVC)
  • Experience in the authoring process
  • Published written works (articles, books, whitepapers)
  • Previous teaching experience
  • Active participation in the open source development process
